THE PULSE OF ENTERTAINMENT
By Eunice Moseley

The Jackson’s are honored at the 8th Annual BMI Urban Awards
“BMI is the first to recognize us…we really appreciate the honor,” Marlon Jackson said while peeping over the shoulders of his older brothers Jackie, Randy and Tito.
CEO/President of BMI, Del R. Bryant and Vice President Catherine Brewton were on hand to host the awards show. The Jacksons (minus Michael and Jermaine) were there to not only walk the red carpet and talk to the pres, but to accept the BMI Icon Award. Sister Janet tearfully presented the award to them while parents Katherine and Joe watched from the front row.
“For me, it felt right,” Del Bryant aid when I asked why BMI chose The Jacksons to honor this year.
“We want people to walk away knowing the early Jacksons,” Catherine Brewton added. “All these people are here because they love the brothers.”
The Jacksons (originally named The Jackson Five) went on the Apollo when Michael was barely seven and they won. Two years later they signed with Motown Record and started opening up for Diana Ross. Their first hit was “I Want You Back,” and the next three single were hits as well. Their fourth hit, “I’ll Be There,” was the first multi-million selling song at the time.
The BMI Urban Awards was held in Beverly Hills at the Wilshire Theatre and it seemed the theatre was filled with all celebrities and press who all came out to honor The Jacksons, as well as the many awardees given honors as BMI songwriters, artists and producers who have had “the most accomplishments in 2008.”
Last year BMI president Del said that BMI brought in almost $900,000,000 for their members. Other members and celebrities that walked the red carpet included Da Mystro, who won for J. Holiday’s “Bed” and for Hurricane Chris’ “A Bay Bay.” Yung Berg, Titianna Ali, Shanice and husband Flex Alexander; Mario, Ray J, Lloyd, Mr. ColliPark, Soulja Boy, T-Pain (who cleaned up with more awards than I could count); Rich Boy, Rick Ross, Vanessa and Angela Simmons;  Dallas Austin, Ce-Lo, Bobby V, JoJo and Timberlin protégé’ Keri Hilson all walked the media line.
Additional winners included Ciara for “Promise,” Mario Winans for Keyshia Cole’s “Late Night;” Soulja Boy for “Crank That,” Rich Boy for “Throw Some D’s,” Lloyd for his “Shawty is a Ten” and “Get It Shawty;” Jim Jones for “We Fly High,” Lonnie Liston Smith and Ezekiel Lewis for Mary J’s “Take Me As I Am;” Ezekiel Lewis for Omarion’s “Ice Box” and Ciara’s “Like A Boy;” Kanye West for “Good Life,” T-Pain, James Ingram and DJ Tool for T-Pain’s “Buy U A Drink;” T-Pain for “Bartender” and “Shawty;” Ne-Yo for Beyonce’s Irreplaceable” and his own “Make Me Better;” T-Pain and Chris Brown for “Kiss Kiss,” and Lil’ Wayne and Fat Joe for “Make it Rain.”
Soulja Boy and Rodney Jerkins received the Top Producer of the Year Award, Ne-Yo received Song of the Year for “Irreplaceable, Universal Music received Publisher of the Year Award and T-Pain received Songwriter of the Year Award.
The awards show ended with a presentation to the Jackson which started with a video clip of scene from their past, the TV and concert shows, the rehearsals, the steps and moves, as well as their many successes. After the video Randy Jackson’s reality show’s dance winners Jabbawokeez did an awesome blend of today’s Hip-Hop dances with the steps of the Jackson brothers; group O.N.E. performed “I Want You Back,” JoJo and Lloyd sang “I’ll Be There;” Mario sang “Heart Break Hotel;” Keri Hilson beautifully sang “Loving You;” Bobby V, Lloyd, Mario and Ray J performed “Never Can Say Goodbye” and then Janet took the stage presenting the BMI Icon Award to her brothers, The Jacksons.
“Well it’s a great honor,” Jackson told me on the red carpet about their BMI Icon Award and their influence on today’s music. “It’s a great feeling to know new artist of today was influenced by the brothers. Let’s you know all that hard work paid off. We are always creating, always writing, it’s our life. Music is our love.”
